How to Minimize Stained Teeth

If you've ever been concerned about the discolouration of your teeth, you may have bought one of the numerous kinds of stain-removing toothpastes there are. Such products are generally effective, but also dangerously abrasive, and should therefore be avoided. Instead, it is recommended that you seek a professional teeth whitening service, and then deal with the source of your problem. However, if you want to keep your teeth as white as possible, there are numerous things to watch out for.

Beverages are probably one of the most common causes for stained teeth. Coffee and tea are known to discolour your teeth, so you should probably not consume too much of either throughout the day. Sports drinks, cola and wine are acidic and stain your teeth considerably. It may look silly when you do it with wine or coffee, but when drinking cola you should definitely use a straw, as this helps keep the drinks away at least from your front teeth. Also, it is wise to brush your teeth after consuming something that may stain your teeth, but if you consume something acidic, you should probably wait about half an hour before brushing, as your teeth are at a risk of abrasion immediately after consuming something acidic. Sugarless gum also helps, if you can't brush your teeth. You will also have to watch what you eat. Many sauces, especially deeply coloured ones, are known to cause tooth staining. The same applies to intensely coloured fruits and berries, and of course also to juices and jam made out of them.

Most of the time, simply swishing your mouth with water right after you consume something that causes tooth staining will help somewhat. Chewing on some sugarless gum in addition to swishing your mouth will help even more, but brushing your teeth is the best way to minimize stained teeth. To keep your teeth clean, you should also floss regularly, as the plaque between your teeth attracts stains. When you do consume something that causes tooth staining, you should probably also swallow as quickly as possible, but remember to chew or you'll choke. It is also important to quit smoking, not only for the sake of your lungs, but also for the sake of your teeth. Do all of this, and you'll certainly minimize stained teeth.
